Is it possible to edit the fields or possibly add fields to the contact form? Or would it be easier to disable this form and install a plugin like formidable?

Thanks for writing.
Actually, the built-in contact form is rigid in terms of fields, there’s no way to add or edit the fields within the WordPress backend. What you can do is maybe try editing from the code, or the other option is what you mention, taking out the form and using some form built by a plugin.
