Slider disappears when pre-footer widgets are added.

Request ID #2618 In Progress
  • Hi,

I’m testing a version of BBQ for a client before we launch it. I followed the instructions to create a Home page and the slider works fine. The info boxes I created also show up fine in addition to footer widgets.

When I add widgets to the pre-footer and then go to preview the site, the slider disappears. When I take those widgets out and test again, the slider has returned.

What is the issue and how can i resolve it?

PS. The BBQ theme is not live. I am viewing it through the WordPress Theme Test Drive plugin to preview before I go live.

    Thanks,
    Gerry

    Hello Gerry,

    Thanks for writing.

Would you please explain me what I have to do to preview the theme with that plugin? I’ve been through your site and you’re using another theme.

Have in mind that for you to see the home page template(the one with the slider and the pre footer widgets), you need to create a page, set the home page template to that page and then set that page as the front page.

    Best,
    Juan.

    Hi Juan,

Yes, I did create a page called Home and it is using the home page template.

For the preview, go to Appearance > Theme Test Drive

Then Choose BBQ as the theme you want to test drive.

As long as you are logged in, you will see the BBQ theme for their site. But, it will not be live for anyone else but you.

Once BBQ is set for the test drive, go to Appearance > Customize > Edit > Static Frontpage > Static Page > Home

—-WARNING!! DO NOT hit Publish!! After viewing just hit CANCEL.

Even before you choose Home as the static page, you will see the slider working. Once you choose Home, the slider disappears, but all the widgets are there.

    Thanks,
    Gerry

    Hi Gerry,

    Thanks for your prompt response.

The front page should be set from “Settings > Reading” as described in our theme documentation: http://nicethemeswp.com/support/theme-docs/bbq/

I went through the customizer to see your problem. And I actually saw it.

I’ve tried the same on our development/testing environment and it is not happening. What lead me to check your site dependencies. I’m pretty sure that it’s plugin related. Plus, I’ve seen that one of the plugins you use is registering its own version of jQuery(from formstarck.com, not sure what plugin) instead of using the one provided by WordPress.

I’m pretty sure the problem is related to this. Would you please try to revise which plugin is doing this? I assume is the one that creates the form in the widgets area.

    Best,
    Juan.

    Hi Juan,

Yes, it was the email list form widget. I took it out and everything worked fine. But, I don’t see how this would affect the slider. It’s a third party piece of code, not a plugin. It’s for their Constant Contact email list. I just used the Text widget and added the code from Constant Contact in it.

    How can we resolve this?

    Thanks,
    Gerry

    Hi Gerry,

It affects the slider because they include a deprecated version of jQuery, and the slider uses jQuery.

So, as the slider have a dependency on jQuery, if they override the version that it should be included with an old one, it causes a conflict. The result, the slider doesn’t work on this exact case, but it could break many other things using jQuery.

I would recommend you to look for an official Constant Contact widget, I’m sure they will play the game nicely – they will do the coding as it should – and won’t be registering other versions of jQuery. Another option would be checking if there’s an updated version of the one that you’re using, a version which doesn’t cause conflicts and is up to date.

    Best,
    Juan.

    Hi Juan,

I will talk to Constant Contact and see what they can do. I did create the form directly from their website and this was less than 1 month ago, so I would think it’s up to date.

On another note, I am trying to put widgets in a sidebar on the other pages of the site such as About Us, Hair, Makeup, etc.. How do I add those widgets? I don’t see how to do it in the widgets area.

    Thanks!

    Hi Gerry,

    Thanks for writing back.

Ok, please keep me updated about the response you get.

With regards to the widgets in the sidebar of pages, there’s a widgetized space named “Pages” where you can put your widgets. You’ll need to use the default page template.

    Best,
    Juan.

    Hi Juan,

That’s where I put the widgets (Pages) and they are still not showing up. All the other pages (besides Home) are set to the default page template.

    Can you take a look?

    Thanks,
    Gerry

    Hi Gerry,

Thanks for writing. I’ve been through your site and I was able to see what you mentioned.

I also saw that you’re running an old version of the theme, that actually had some bugs regarding sidebars. I would recommend you to update your theme to the latest version and then check if the problem is still happening.

    Thanks for your patience,
    Juan.

    Hi Juan,

Ok, how do I download the latest version of the theme? I purchased it through Theme Forest.

    Thanks,
    Gerry

    Hi Gerry,

You can send me the purchase id to support@nicethemeswp.com and I’ll set up your account. Or you can download it through themeforest.

    Best,
    Juan

Ok, just so I know, what is the latest version number of BBQ? Will I have to go back and make all my changes to the theme all over again? I made a few changes in the CSS. I am emailing you now.

    Thanks,
    Gerry

    Juanfra Aldasoro

    Hi Gerry,

The latest version to date is 1.1.4.

With regards to the CSS changes, yes – you should take those changes over the file custom.css or to the custom styles option within the options panel.

I’ve configured your account so you can now download the theme from your dashboard.

    Best,
    Juan.

    Hi Juan,

Thanks. So, I can download the latest version of the theme from which dashboard?

    Thanks,
    Gerry
