I’m wondering if there is a way I can remove the featured image from showing up automatically within that portfolio slideshow.

It seems the featured pic is just inserted into the slideshows like the other attached images.

Unfortunately there’s no way to make that through the options, you should dig into the code in order to avoid showing that image.
