Having in mind your other forum thread I assume you have your site installed locally, is that right? Because that might be the problem when trying to use the contact built-in template. The contact template uses some mail function that wont work unless you have a mail server installed in your computer.

With regards to the slider, all you need to do is upload more than one image to the portfolio item you wish to have a slider. That will create a gallery and automatically generates a slider in the portfolio item template.
